YouTube videos on Sail measurements are the first of several being produced to educate new measurers and the public on measurement techniques for boats, spars and sails Annapolis, USA  -- As part of its ongoing commitment to support offshore sailing around the world, members of the technical team of the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC) have been working with T2P Productions to produce a series of instructional videos on measurement of boats, sails and spars. These videos provide step-by-step guidance on the techniques of collecting the measurement data outlined in the International Measurement System rules that are needed by rule authorities to produce certificates for ORC and other rating systems as well. As such these videos provide practical reinforcement of the Universal Measurement System concept that is supported by World Sailing. The first in the series are three short videos each on the measurement of Mainsails, Headsails and Spinnakers. Other videos in final production now and to be made available soon are on Boats, Propellers, Rigs, and Stability. "Accurate measurement data provides the fundamental backbone of any science-based handicap rating system," says Bruno Finzi, Chairman of ORC. "We feel these videos are an important step forward in making the racing public more aware of how this data is collected so they may then have a better understanding of how its use affects their ratings, and in turn their racing." The Mainsail, Headsail and Spinnaker videos have been made searchable, or "Public", on YouTube with the following titles and descriptions:  "How to Properly Measure Sailboats - Mainsails" In an effort to standardize the way measurers around the world are measuring sails, this is an instructional video on how to properly measure a mainsail.  "How to Properly Measure Sailboats - Headsails" In an effort to standardize the way measurers around the world are measuring sails, this is an instructional video on how to properly measure a headsail, whether on the headstay or set flying.   "How to Properly Measure Sailboats - Spinnakers" In an effort to standardize the way measurers around the world are measuring sails, this is an instructional video on how to properly measure a spinnaker, whether symmetrical or asymmetrical. The videos have also been added to a playlist with the following title and description: "How to Properly Measure Sailboats" In an effort to standardize the way measurers around the world are measuring in sails, this instructional video on how to properly measure mainsails, headsails and spinnakers.   More on Measurement, the ORC rating system, ORC certificates and events can be found at www.orc.org.

Claus Landmark drove his Landmark 43 Santa to a runaway victory in Class B at the inaugural Offshore Sailing Worlds at the Hague.  Her sistership White Shadow of Torkel Valland was second, both well clear of the third place finisher.   The first event to combine the IRC and ORC World Championships, it was scored using the combined results under each rule, underlining the strength of this Mills Design 43 footer in the light medium conditions that prevailed off the Dutch coast.   Landmark had previously won the 2016 ORC World Championship in Santa, but success here carries twice the sweetness as it represents the first coordinated effort to bring the world’s two major rating systems together at a single event.  Designer Mark Mills commented after the event “This provides us with a well controlled trial for comparing the two rating systems, from which we are learning more about crossover opportunities to make our designs more capable under both rules, and perhaps under a unified rule of the future.” Looking for a good Landmark as well to win in Croatia? We have a beautiful 43 for sale. More info: https://www.racing-yachts.com/landmark-43-168.html http://mills-design.com/2018/07/landmark-43-s-are-offshore-world-champions/

The two Dutch-skippered teams in the Volvo Ocean Race, team AkzoNobel and Team Brunel are leapfrogging over each other in a bid to set and hold a new 24 hour distance record. Team Brunel, at the head of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet on Leg 9 from Newport, USA to Cardiff, Wales, was the first to set a new 24-hour distance record in the Volvo Ocean 65 class. Bouwe Bekking's team blew past the previous record of 550.8 nautical miles set in the last race by Abu Dhabi Racing just after 14:00 UTC on Thursday afternoon. But they didn't hold the record for long. Simeon Tienpont's team AkzoNobel soon bettered their rival and the teams traded blows in ideal speed-making conditions in the North Atlantic. As at 17:06 UTC, the best run for team AkzoNobel was 566.02 nautical miles, while Team Brunel had posted 563.06 nm. UPDATE: At 1900 UTC Team Brunel had posted 576.34 nautical miles and team AkzoNobel 579.12 nm. www.volvooceanrace.com from Scuttlebutt

Plenty Wins Farr 40 North American Championship Long Beach, California: Skipper Alex Roepers and his team on Plenty put forth one of the most impressive performances in the 2018 Farr 40 North American Championship, posting a tremendous score line en route to a commanding victory. Roeper steered Plenty to first place finishes in 10 of 11 races to post a remarkably low score of 11 points - 22 better than runner-up Struntje Light - to capture his second North American crown. Veteran professional Terry Hutchinson called tactics for Roepers, who has now won both his North American titles while racing off Long Beach. Plenty previously captured the 2014 North American Championship, which was also held out of Long Beach Yacht Club. Needless to say, this particular part of the Pacific Ocean has become a favorite venue for Roepers, a New York City resident. Owner-drive Wolfgang Schaefer and his team on Struntje Light won a dramatic match race with Australian Temptress in the last race to place second in the overall standings. The German entry placed fourth in Race 11 while the Australian boat finished sixth, a two-point swing that produced a flip-flop in the standings. Struntje Light trailed Australian Temptress entering the final race and came out of it ahead by one. Sten Mohr made his debut as tactician aboard Struntje Light, which won Race 2 and took second in five other starts in posting a total score of 34 points. Australian Temptress, skippered by Ray Roberts, won the Corinthian class, with 35 points, bettering the second place boat by 18 points. Mick Schlens on Blade 2 finished second, followed by the CalMaritime team. Full results: yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=4753 farr40.org Looking for a Farr 40?
